Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah has come under intense fire across Assam following his controversial remarks about Hemchandra Baruah — the revered lexicographer, reformer, and author of Hemkosh, the first Assamese dictionary. The comments, perceived as disrespectful and dismissive, have drawn widespread condemnation from intellectual circles, civil society, and especially from the people of Dergaon, the birthplace of Hemchandra Baruah.
The minister's remarks, allegedly targeting Hemchandra Baruah and his family, have deeply offended the public, particularly in Dergaon, where residents have expressed strong resentment and demanded an explanation. Locals accuse Minister Baruah of belittling a towering figure of Assamese literature and culture for personal political gain.
“Using such a tone while referring to the legacy of Hemchandra Baruah is not only irresponsible but also deeply hurtful to Assamese sentiment,” said a local resident in Dergaon. The town, proud of its connection to Hemchandra Baruah, has now issued a call for the minister to visit Dergaon and examine the family lineage of the eminent scholar if he questions their legacy.
Citizens and cultural advocates across the state have rallied in defence of Hemchandra Baruah's legacy, calling the minister's statement a direct insult to the emotional and linguistic heritage of Assam. The Hemkosh, first published in the early 20th century, is regarded as a cornerstone of Assamese identity and language development.
The public has demanded that Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah retract his comments and refrain from making such flippant statements about one of Assam’s most respected historical figures. "Hemchandra Baruah is not just a name—he is a pillar of Assamese language and pride. Any attempt to undermine his contribution will be met with resistance from the people of Assam," another local said.
