Prove Corruption in Court, Not Press Meets: Assam CM Hits Back at Akhil Gogoi

Amid intensifying allegations by Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi against Assam’s Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday came out in strong defence of his cabinet colleague, challenging Gogoi to present evidence in court instead of resorting to media briefings.

Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister categorically dismissed Akhil's charges as politically motivated and lacking substance. "Rather than addressing press meets every other day, Akhil Gogoi should move the court if he has any proof. If any land was indeed bought through corrupt means, let the judiciary examine it,” Dr. Sarma asserted.

Referring to past accusations, Sarma recalled how Gogoi had made similar claims against him in 2009. "Even back then, he said many things about me. But he never went to court. These allegations made in press conferences serve no purpose,” the Chief Minister said.

He further underlined the transparency expected during elections, stating, “When elections come, we all submit our affidavits detailing our assets. If anyone believes there are irregularities in my wealth or that of my family, they are welcome to scrutinize the affidavits and move to court.”

Sarma also defended the right of individuals to accumulate wealth through honest means. “If someone works hard and earns wealth legitimately, what's the problem with that? The only condition is — it shouldn't be earned through corruption or scandal,” he added.

Turning the tables on Akhil Gogoi, the Chief Minister questioned the source of funds behind his political activities.

“He is now fielding multiple candidates. Where is the money coming from? He must have gotten it from somewhere. But we have never questioned him, because everything will be made public in affidavits, which the people of Assam will see,” Sarma said.

Appealing for a more constructive political approach, Sarma said, “Instead of spending two hours in a press conference, he could’ve met 10 people from his constituency. I believe every MLA should work for the development of their region. If Akhil Gogoi wants to do that, we will extend all support. But what is the point of poking everyone unnecessarily?”

The remarks come amid a political storm triggered by Akhil Gogoi’s recent press meet where he accused Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah of amassing disproportionate assets and engaging in shady land deals.
