Reliance Foundation Brings Critical Relief

As Assam reels under the impact of devastating floods that struck in late May and early June, the Reliance Foundation has launched a large-scale relief effort across some of the state’s worst-affected areas. The initiative, which has already reached thousands in Cachar, Nagaon, and Sribhumi districts, focuses on critical public health, clean water access, veterinary aid, and livelihood protection.

The foundation's intervention spanned 50 flood-ravaged villages, targeting both immediate survival needs and long-term resilience. Even before the floods hit, Reliance Foundation teams were on the ground issuing early warnings in vulnerable communities to aid evacuation and preparedness.

As floodwaters surged and water sources became contaminated, the Foundation swiftly rolled out a public health awareness campaign, reaching over 74,000 people. The campaign shared vital information on disease prevention, hygiene, and safe water usage — with a specific focus on women and adolescent girls, who are often among the most vulnerable during disasters.

To address the acute shortage of safe drinking water, the Foundation deployed a mobile water filtration unit that converted polluted surface water into clean, drinkable water. In just five days, the unit produced around 3,000 litres of potable water for over 200 people in high-risk areas. Awareness sessions on safe storage and water handling were also conducted to prevent waterborne diseases.

Livestock-dependent families, many of whom lost their primary means of income, also received targeted support. The Foundation organised 15 veterinary camps where more than 5,300 animals were treated. Over 650 farmers received direct animal health assistance, helping them recover a key pillar of their livelihood.

Sanitation was another major concern in the wake of the floods. To help families maintain hygiene, Reliance Foundation distributed 1,500 sanitation kits containing essentials such as soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, buckets, and mugs. These kits helped mitigate health risks in flooded areas where living conditions had deteriorated rapidly.

A crucial part of the relief operation was the involvement of more than 50 Reliance employees based in Assam, who volunteered to assemble and distribute the sanitation kits. Their efforts ensured that even remote villages like Sarupathar in Nagaon district received timely assistance.

The Foundation’s efforts reflect a people-first, rapid-response approach to disaster relief — combining community engagement, technical support, and on-the-ground volunteering. As Assam begins its long road to recovery, the work carried out by Reliance Foundation underscores the importance of timely action, local collaboration, and a focus on rebuilding resilient communities.
