The rise in road accidents in Assam is one of the most crucial problems in the state but state Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on Monday revealed that the accidents have reduced by 25.15 percent and that the number of casualties have come down by 2.74 percent in the state.

Addressing a meeting of the State Road Safety Council onJuly 8, Patowary said that the total number of accidents and fatalities fromApril to May 2018 were 1830 and 548 respectively which have come down to 1370and 533 from April to May, 2019 respectively.

The minister during the course of the meeting stated thatall the district hospitals and sub-divisional hospitals will be designated asTrauma Care Centre and the doctors are paramedical staff will be trainedthrough All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi to cater tothe emergency services.

It is to be noted that in 2018, the number of roadaccidents were recorded with 3963 which stood at 48.05%, 3389 injuries which is45.95% and 1541 fatalities which is 51.95%. These accidents took place in theNational Highways. Therefore, the minister directed the officials of NHAI andNHIDCL to make rumble strips in the identified Black Spots as well as at thejunctions of State Highways and National Highways with adequate number ofsignages and lighting to reduce the figures.
