Saraighat jam for next few months

Saraight bridge chaos to continue for months and  District authorities are livid that NF railway authorities are not taking full interest and using a small workforce.

This is noteworthy that old Saraighat bridge was under repair and what was supposed to be a war footing repairing work is now progressing like a normal civil work leaving thousand soft commune res stranded for more than 3-4 hours every days.

An Angry Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Kamrup district, Kamal Kumar Baishya addressing a presser said, "The speed on which the NFR is moving forward to repair the bridge, the work will not even be complete in the coming months. People travelling through the bridge will face problems as repairing work is still going on. The Railways have appointed only 13 workers to repair such a long bridge. How is this possible?"

That means the repair work may take at least 3-4 months.

"They (NFR) have completed only 20 per cent of the repairing work in the last one and half months. They should immediately increase the speed of their work or else they will take a year to complete it. The repairing work of such a long bridge is not a joke. The NFR shouldn't take it lightly," he added.

It may be mentioned, the old Saraighat Bridge was closed in the month of March 2019 for 90 days to carry out "massive" repair work.

The Saraighat Bridge is the first rail-cum-road bridge constructed over the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The Saraighat rail-cum-road bridge, which was commissioned in 1963, handles a huge volume of road and rail traffic everyday. The bridge was built by the Northeast Frontier Railway, under the direction of chief engineer Bankim Chandra Ganguli.

Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru dedicated the bridge and formally named it after the Battle of Saraighat on June 7th, 1963.
