Assam: Doctor Allegedly Removes Patient’s Genitals During Biopsy at Private Hospital

A horrifying case of medical negligence has come to light in Silchar, where a doctor at a private hospital allegedly amputated a patient’s genitals under the pretext of conducting a biopsy test. The incident, which has triggered widespread outrage and calls for accountability, took place at RE Hospital, located in the Ghungoor area of the town.

The victim, Atiquar Rahman, a resident of Jiribam district in neighbouring Manipur, had approached the hospital seeking treatment for an infection in his genital area. According to the complaint filed by Rahman with the Ghungoor Police Station, he was admitted to RE Hospital a few days ago under the care of Dr. Eden Sinha, a Laparoscopic Surgeon of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).

As part of the treatment process, Dr. Sinha reportedly advised a biopsy to further investigate the infection. Rahman alleges that he was taken to the operation theatre for the procedure but was not informed or asked for consent regarding any major surgical intervention.

To his horror, Rahman later discovered that his entire genital organ had been surgically removed. “I didn’t realise what had happened immediately due to the dressing. But once it was removed, I saw what had been done to me,” Rahman said in his statement to the police.

Attempts to meet or question the doctor were allegedly blocked by the hospital management. “The hospital authorities refused to let me speak to Dr. Sinha. They ignored my questions and concerns,” the patient told local reporters.

Left with no option, Rahman approached the police and filed a formal FIR against Dr. Eden Sinha, accusing him of performing a life-altering surgery without informed consent. The complaint has been registered at the Ghungoor Police Station, and an investigation has been launched.

A senior police official from Ghungoor confirmed receipt of the complaint and said appropriate legal steps are being taken. “We have received a detailed complaint from the patient. A case has been registered, and the matter is under investigation,” the official said.

The shocking nature of the allegations has drawn strong reactions from civil society members, who are now demanding a thorough and impartial probe. Medical professionals have also expressed concern over the ethical violations and potential criminal liability involved in the case.

As the investigation proceeds, questions are being raised about how such a serious breach of medical ethics could occur in a registered private healthcare facility. Meanwhile, the hospital has not issued an official statement on the matter.

The victim continues to seek justice and has urged authorities to take strict action against the doctor responsible. The incident has not only left him physically and emotionally scarred but has also highlighted the urgent need for stronger oversight and transparency in private medical practices.
