Amid rising complaints of traffic chaos and pedestrian inconvenience, the Sribhumi Municipal Board launched a sweeping eviction drive on Saturday, targeting unauthorised street vendors who had been occupying public spaces in key areas of the city for years.
Despite being allotted space in government-sanctioned retail markets, scores of small-scale traders continued to run their businesses illegally along the edges of major roads — including the Main Point, Lakhibazar Road, and adjoining stretches — turning the city’s arteries into congested, chaotic stretches.
Civic officials say this is not the first time efforts were made to address the problem. Over the past several months, the municipal committee had issued repeated notices urging the vendors to relocate to the city's designated central market. However, those appeals went unheeded, with vendors continuing to occupy pavements and encroach upon government land.
On Saturday, faced with mounting pressure from commuters and residents, the authorities finally acted. Backed by a large contingent of security forces, the municipal team rolled into several key locations with bulldozers, clearing temporary stalls and reclaiming encroached land. The operation continued for several hours and was closely supervised by senior municipal officials.
