Indian Army Carries Out Major Drone Strikes on ULFA-I, NSCN(K) Camps in Myanmar
In a major cross-border operation, the Indian Army reportedly launched a series of drone strikes on insurgent camps belonging to the United Liberation Front of Asom- Independent (ULFA-I) and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) located inside Myanmar’s Sagaing Region in the early hours of Sunday.
According to intelligence sources, the coordinated attack took place around dawn and involved over a hundred unmanned aerial vehicles targeting rebel hideouts in the Naga Self-Administered Zone, near the India-Myanmar border. The operation is believed to have been carried out in close coordination with the Myanmar military.
One of the primary targets was ULFA-I’s 779 Camp located at Waktham Basti. Sources claim that five cadres of the outfit were present in the camp at the time of the drone strike. However, no injuries or fatalities have been confirmed from this particular location.
A separate and reportedly more intense attack targeted ULFA-I’s Eastern Command Headquarters (ECHQ) at Hoyat Basti, also situated within the Sagaing Region. While official confirmation is still awaited, preliminary reports suggest that ULFA-I’s top commander Nayan Medhi, alias Nayan Asom, may have been killed in the strike. Nayan Asom is considered a key strategist and military trainer within the banned outfit.
The drone operation also hit several NSCN(K) positions in the vicinity. Unverified intelligence inputs suggest multiple casualties among the Naga insurgent group’s cadres, although exact figures remain unclear.
Security experts view the strikes as part of a renewed Indian counter-insurgency strategy aimed at dismantling safe havens of Northeast militant groups operating from across the border. Myanmar's remote jungle regions have long served as strategic bases for ULFA-I, NSCN(K), and other insurgent outfits active in Assam and Nagaland.
Neither the Indian Ministry of Defence nor the Myanmar authorities have issued an official statement regarding the strikes as of the time of filing this report.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in the Northeast, particularly in Assam, following a resurgence in militant activity over the past year.
More details are awaited.
