TMC to send eight member delegation to Assam amid NRC row
Updated on

Following the release of the final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) will send an eight member delegation to the state in the first week of August.

The delegation will assess the situation in the state after the publication of the final draft of the NRC on Monday. Soon after the publication, the Congress and TMC had repeatedly alleged the entire process to be 'vote bank politics' and politically motivated. The Opposition had also created a commotion in the Parliament, forcing the adjournment of the Rajya Sabha.

"On August 2 and 3, a delegation comprising six MPs of the Trinamool Congress (Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Ratna De Nag, Nadimul Haque, Arpita Ghosh, Mamata Thakur), MLA Mohua Moitra and West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim will be visiting Assam," the TMC said in a statement.

The draft list has left out 40 lakh people in Assam, incorporating 2.89 crore names out of the 3.29 applicants. The list was prepared according to the directions of the Supreme Court to identify permanent residents and illegal migrants from Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal have said that no coercive or drastic actions like arrests or deportation would be made against people whose names have not featured in the list, saying that time would be given to people to file claims.
