Top Anti CAB leader quits, to join BJP

The Anti CAB pressure group leaders belong to both "70" and "30" national originations are slowly lining up to secure their political future in the coming days.

Some of them are openly negotiating and some are doing it discreetly but most are desperate to join either BJP or AGP and secure their political future irrespective of their past personal stand on the CAB.

This evening All Assam Tai Ahom Student union (AATASU) Adviser Ashwini Chetia tendered his resignation from the organisation after meeting Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma. The resignation came in anticipation of a win for BJP candidate Tapan Gogoi in Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency which will necessitate bye-election in Sonari Assembly constituency.

Mr Chetia was a senior leader of the anti CAB protest and often seen together with Akhil Gogoi. He is most likely joining BJP on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit Upper Assam for electioneering. Mr. Chetia was a member of the 70 Jatiya Sangthan bloc led by Akhil Gogoi during the anti CAB protest.

Mr Chetia met Chief Minister  Sonowal and PWD Minister Dr Sharma today at the Chief Minister's official residence and vowed to work for the BJP and use his network amongst the Ahom community for the BJP in the coming Lok Sabha election.

Ironically another anti CAB leader and Asom Jatiyadabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) President Palash Changmai is also eyeing the same Sonari seat. He, however, has not made up his mind to join BJP or AGP but very keen to become an MLA.

However back door negotiation with the BJP was going on for this strong anti CAB leader too.  But after Chetia joining BJP, his chance of getting Sonari seat is almost nil and hence may shift to the AGP. The BJP source also confirmed that at least two dozen strong anti CAB leaders are desperate to join the BJP in coming days.
