A wild elephant trampled a 62-year old man to death in Bholatar village of Udalguri district in the early morning of Saturday.
The incident took place when the deceased Ram Bahadur Gautam, alongwith some villagers had gone to chase away a wild elephant that had enteredtheir paddy fields.
According to villagers, the elephant was wreaking havoc in thearea since few days and suspected that it must have been isolated from the herdof elephants.
The victim was rushed to Tangla CHC where he was declared dead.
The villagers alleged that the forest department never comes onpatrolling in the village and that it has failed to tackle the menace. Theysaid that it is not the first time that the elephant has created havoc in thearea but they face the same problem frequently and also many people have losttheir lives due to the terror of elephant.
According to reports, 19 people have lost their lives so farthis year in the human-elephant conflict.
