"Without CM's Knowledge, ULFA-I Strike Not Possible": Says Gaurav Gogoi

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has sharply reacted to the reported drone attack on a ULFA (Independent) camp in Myanmar, alleging that the operation could not have taken place without the knowledge of top Indian authorities.

APCC president and Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Monday questioned the silence of both the Assam government and the Centre over the recent strike, stating, “The government is fully aware of the attack. A drone strike of this scale cannot take place without the knowledge of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma repeatedly claims to have a close rapport with Paresh Baruah. Precision strikes like this are not possible without his knowledge.”

He further remarked, “Some are calling it an 'Operation Sindoor', but to us, it feels more like a repeat of the secret killings from the past, targeting our own Assamese brothers.”

Gogoi’s comments come amid growing political uproar following reports of a cross-border military operation targeting ULFA (I) cadres, which reportedly resulted in casualties among Assamese insurgents.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia also expressed concern over the incident, demanding a clear and official statement from the government. He urged the administration to disclose who sanctioned the attack and to clarify its potential implications for the ongoing peace process with insurgent groups.

Saikia further stated, “Many lives were reportedly lost in this incident. But the bigger question is: what happens to the peace that was carefully nurtured since 2023? Will that peace survive this strike? We urge both the state and central governments to issue an official explanation as to why this attack on the ULFA (I) camp took place.”

The opposition’s sharp reactions signal an emerging political controversy in Assam over the handling of the ULFA (I) issue, especially at a time when discussions around possible peace talks had gained traction.
