“Congress Will Form Govt. in 2026”—Debabrata Saikia Claims in Sivasagar

In what could be considered a tall claim, LoP, Assam assembly and Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia said in Sivasagar today that Congress will form the next government in 2026.

Mr. Saikia commented on the programme of appointing the Sivasagar district Congress presidency. Ajay Gogoi has been officially appointed as the new Sivasagar District Congress President. The appointment comes shortly after Gaurav Gogoi assumed leadership as the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President and initiated widespread changes across the state’s party leadership, introducing new presidents in almost all districts.

Ajay Gogoi’s formal induction was marked by enthusiastic celebrations by party workers. A massive bike rally welcomed the new president from his residence in Dimow to Sivasagar. Upon arrival, Gogoi performed puja at the Shiv Dal temple, followed by prayers at the Dalmukh Chariali Mosque. He later arrived at Rajiv Bhawan, the district party office, accompanied by supporters.

The appointment ceremony was graced by the Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia, along with several key members of the party. Addressing the gathering, Ajay Gogoi expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and assured that he would work tirelessly to strengthen the party’s base. “Our focus must be on strengthening the organisational structure first,” he stated.

Speaking to party workers and the media, Debabrata Saikia launched a sharp attack on the ruling BJP government. He criticised the party for what he described as widespread corruption and alleged indifference toward the concerns of ordinary citizens. “The BJP is only interested in announcing schemes to distract the public from real issues,” he said.

The Leader of Opposition also questioned the state government’s stance on the issue of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. “Is the Chief Minister playing with people’s emotions or genuinely trying to address the issue? Are these Bangladeshis even real, or is it just a tool to mislead the public?” he asked.

Saikia accused the BJP of orchestrating a long-term plan to marginalise farmers. “These schemes are designed to make people abandon farming. Eventually, they won’t need their land, and the government will sell it to corporations,” he alleged.

Expressing confidence, Saikia concluded by saying, “The Congress party has always stood for accountability, and in 2026, we are hoping to form the government.”
