Addressing the 2nd North East Geology & Mining Ministers’ Conclave held in Guwahati, the Union Minister emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward illegal mining and mineral syndicates, urging state governments and local communities to actively support enforcement efforts.

No Place for Illegal Mines in the Northeast: Reddy

Highlighting the tragic fatalities in Dima Hasao due to unauthorized coal mining, Reddy expressed grief and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to eradicating such practices. “The Supreme Court has already directed all states to act strictly against illegal mining,” the minister said, calling on state authorities to intensify crackdowns on coal syndicates.

“There should be no syndicates of minerals. Mineral resources are the wealth of the country,” Reddy stressed. He reiterated that no illegal coal mines will be tolerated across any of the Northeastern states, and advocated for transparent, regulated mining practices that contribute to the national economy.

Assam Plans Strategic Mineral Auctions, Exploration in Hills

Backing the Centre’s call for legal and sustainable mining, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined a bold mineral development roadmap for the state. He announced that five limestone blocks are being auctioned, with one scheduled to be operational by December 2025.

Sarma also revealed that the Geological Survey of India has been tasked with conducting mineral exploration in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong, focusing on limestone, silicon, and iron deposits. The hill districts, along with Dima Hasao, are being positioned as key zones in Assam’s long-term resource strategy.

Push for Coal Allocation for 3400 MW Power Project

The Chief Minister made a formal request to the Union Minister for coal allocation for a proposed 3400 MW thermal power project, highlighting the state's ambitions in power generation through responsible resource utilization. He emphasized the importance of Centre-State synergy in unlocking the mineral potential of the Northeast.

“We must aim to become a contributing state rather than depending on others,” Sarma said, encouraging a shift toward self-reliance through sustainable mineral development.

A Shift Toward Responsible, Regulated Mining

The convergence of the Centre’s crackdown on illegal mining and Assam’s proactive mineral development strategy signals a renewed focus on legal, transparent, and environmentally responsible mining in the region.

With increasing emphasis on infrastructure growth, energy production, and resource exploration, the state appears poised to transform its rich mineral deposits into engines of economic progress—without compromising environmental or human safety standards.
