AAMSU Hits Delhi Streets Over Evictions in Assam

In a fiery protest held at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on Wednesday, the All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) launched a scathing attack on the Assam government over a spate of eviction drives targeting Muslim-dominated areas across the state. The student body accused the BJP-led government of waging an orchestrated campaign to marginalize and dehumanize Assam’s indigenous and landless Muslim communities, warning of intensified nationwide protests if the evictions are not immediately halted and those displaced are not rehabilitated.

Standing before placards bearing slogans like "Stop Ethnic Targeting in Assam" and "Eviction Without Rehabilitation Is Injustice", AAMSU leaders alleged that the government is deliberately creating a climate of fear and division, likening the ongoing situation in Assam to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Palestine.

AAMSU president Rejaul Karim Sarkar, addressing the gathering, stated: "We have come to Delhi to catch the attention of the central government. What Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is doing in Assam is nothing short of demonic. He is engineering forced evictions and harassment of Muslims across the state. It must be stopped."

Sarkar further claimed that over 30 lakh people in Assam have lost their homes due to river erosion and yet continue to be ignored by the state government.

"Instead of helping the displaced, the government is portraying them as illegal occupants. It is deliberately dividing Hindus and Muslims. Assam’s people must see through this agenda. A situation is being prepared for Assam’s Muslims that resembles life under siege, like Gaza or Palestine," he added.

Warning of a nationwide agitation, Sarkar said: "Once we return to Assam, the movement will gain more strength. And if the government continues this targeted persecution, we will take this fight to every corner of the country. The world must see how Assamese Muslims are being pushed to the edge — even to suicide — by a state that treats them as unwanted."

Another AAMSU leader echoed similar sentiments, condemning the forced evictions of people who have already proven their citizenship.

"Even those who have their names in the NRC, who are constitutionally guaranteed rights, are being harassed and evicted. This is not about legality — it’s about targeting a community under the guise of law and order. We oppose this with full force," the leader stated.
