Senior NCP leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has reportedly died after a plane crash in Baramati on Wednesday morning.

Preliminary information suggests that the aircraft was carrying six passengers in addition to Pawar, his security personnel and the pilots at the time of the accident. All those on board are said to have died.

Kiran Gujar, a close aide of Pawar who is present at the local hospital in Baramati, told reporters that all six individuals, including the NCP leader, were brought dead.

Pawar was on his way to Baramati to address four public meetings ahead of the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections when the incident occurred.

Confirming details of the crash, Baramati airport manager Shivaji Taware told the media that the aircraft, identified as VT-SSK, went off the side of the runway while attempting to land and subsequently crashed. He said the aircraft was a Learjet 45 chartered from Mumbai.

The Baramati airport, which is operated by a private entity, was recently handed over to the Maharashtra Airport Development Company.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the crash.
