In a bid to enhance connectivity and boost infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Government has sanctioned 19 major road and tunnel projects worth Rs 10,637 crore. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
Sharing the development in a post on 'X', the L-G said, “Extremely grateful to PM Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for approving 19 mega road and tunnel projects for J&K UT worth Rs 10,637 crore.”
Among the key projects approved are the construction of the Peer-Ki-Gali and Sadhana tunnels, the Zaznar–Shopian section of NH-701A, a four-lane flyover from Lal Chowk to Parimpora, the Trehgam–Chamkote stretch of NH-701, a four-lane flyover at Magam on the Narbal–Gulmarg route, and the Qazigund Bypass.
“Many strategically important projects will improve logistical support and troops’ mobility. The projects will improve infrastructure in UT and connect various tourist destinations. The construction of tunnels will reduce travel time, ensure all-weather connectivity and spur economic growth,” the L-G added.
The sanctioned projects are expected to significantly improve transportation across the Union Territory, particularly in areas that are often cut off during harsh winters due to heavy snowfall. Improved road and tunnel networks will also provide faster access to locations near the Line of Control (LoC), strengthening both civilian and strategic mobility.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the announcement and acknowledged the Centre’s support. He said, “The J&K Government would work in close coordination with the Road Transport and Highways Ministry to ensure the timely execution of these vital infrastructure projects.”
