Delhi GRP Releases Suspected Traffickers; ASCPCR Flags Safety of Rescued Minor
A suspected case of human trafficking involving a minor girl from Karbi Anglong, Assam has triggered an urgent investigation following her dramatic rescue at Kanpur Railway Station while allegedly being transported to Rajasthan for forced marriage.
The minor, identified as Sanam Kumari Mahato, a resident of Mosoka village under Hawaipur in Karbi Anglong district, was reportedly being taken by three individuals from Guwahati to Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. During the journey, the girl managed to alert a fellow passenger at Kanpur Railway Station, who in turn informed the Railway Police Force (RPF). The swift action by the RPF led to her rescue, and she was later handed over to the Delhi Government Railway Police.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, all three suspected traffickers were released by the Delhi GRP, raising serious concerns about the girl's continued safety. It has been alleged that the girl is still under threat from the traffickers.
In response to the incident, Dr. Shyamal Prasad Saikia, IPS (Retd.), Chairperson of the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR), has written to the Superintendent of Police, Karbi Anglong, seeking immediate intervention. The letter, based on a complaint received from the Executive Director of Kosi Lok Manch, emphasizes the urgent need to protect the minor and ensure legal action against the accused.
Dr. Saikia's letter calls for the girl to be safely brought back to Assam and produced before the Child Welfare Committee in Karbi Anglong for further legal procedures. The Commission has also requested that strict action be initiated under relevant laws against those involved in the alleged trafficking attempt.
Meanwhile, in a related development, the Delhi Police had earlier confirmed that they had questioned a youth from Rajasthan and the girl—who was then claimed to be 18 years and a month old. They produced documents suggesting a consensual marriage on June 30. Following verification, both were released.
However, the emerging complaint and discrepancies have led to renewed suspicion, particularly in light of an alleged ₹2 lakh transaction involved in the case. The Delhi police have not ruled out the possibility of human trafficking and have assured a deeper investigation.
The case has highlighted the vulnerability of minors to trafficking under the guise of marriage and raised questions over inter-agency coordination in protecting victims.
The Assam State Commission has enclosed a photograph of the minor girl and a copy of the original complaint in its communication to the district police.
