The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a stern warning to Air India, cautioning that the airline’s license could be suspended or withdrawn over “repeated and serious violations” of pilot duty scheduling and operational oversight.
The aviation regulator, in an enforcement order dated June 20, directed the immediate removal of three senior officials from roles related to crew scheduling. The officials named are Choorah Singh, Divisional Vice President of the Integrated Operations Control Centre (IOCC); Pinky Mittal, Chief Manager-DOPS (Crew Scheduling); and Payal Arora, Crew Scheduling-Planning.
The DGCA cited "systemic failures in crew scheduling, compliance monitoring, and internal accountability" as grounds for the disciplinary action. According to the order, the individuals in question were directly responsible for repeated operational lapses, and their continued presence in key roles posed a risk to regulatory compliance and safety protocols.
"Of particular concern is the absence of strict disciplinary measures against key officials directly responsible for these operational lapses,” the DGCA stated, adding that the agency will not hesitate to take stronger action in the future. “Any future violation of crew scheduling norms, licensing conditions, or flight time limitations, as detected in any post-audit or inspection, will invite strict enforcement measures. These may include penalties, suspension of license, or withdrawal of operator permissions, as deemed applicable."
The latest action comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of Air India following the tragic crash of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on June 12.
In response to the DGCA's directive, Air India confirmed that the three officials named in the order have been removed from their respective positions.
“In the interim, the company’s Chief Operations Officer will oversee the IOCC to ensure continuity and compliance,” the airline said in an official statement. “Air India remains fully committed to adhering to all safety regulations and maintaining the highest operational standards.”
