India's domestic air travel market saw a modest year-on-year growth of 1.89% in May, with 14.05 million passengers flying across the country, according to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

In comparison, domestic airlines carried 13.79 million passengers during May 2024. The slight uptick indicates steady demand in the domestic aviation sector, despite seasonal and operational challenges.

IndiGo continued its dominance in the skies, flying 9.30 million passengers in May and capturing a commanding 64% share of the domestic market. The Air India Group, which includes Air India, Air India Express, and AIX Connect, secured the second position, carrying 3.72 million passengers and accounting for a 26.5% market share.

Among other carriers, Akasa Air transported 0.74 million passengers, holding a 5.3% share of the market, while SpiceJet flew 0.34 million passengers, making up 2.4% of the total domestic air traffic.

In terms of on-time performance (OTP), IndiGo topped the charts with 84% punctuality from six major airports—Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata. Air India followed with a respectable 79.7% OTP, reflecting improvements in schedule reliability across key hubs.
