Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday announced that the free-ride scheme for women might be extended to senior citizens and students on Delhi public buses.

Kejriwal said that this scheme will help in women empowerment bybridging the gender gap that exists in society, adding that this was a giftfrom their brother on 'Bhai Dooj.'

He further said that now girls and women who had to drop out ofschools and colleges because of high transportation cost don't need tosacrifice their education. They can now take buses to good schools and collegeswhich are away from their homes.

Similarly, women whose offices are far need not worry abouttransportation cost, said Kejriwal.

Under the scheme, pink tickets are issued to the women who takeDelhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses and cluster buses worth Rs. 10. The governmentwill reimburse transporters based on the number of such tickets issued.

Kejriwal in a mobile application 'AK App' said that bus ridesfor senior citizens and students might be made free too in the coming days addingthat every step cannot be completed once. "We will definitely do it. Let usstart with women and see the results and based on the result we will definitelydeliberate on making these rides free for senior citizens and students too inthe future," Kejriwal said.
