Kerala floods, landslides claims lives of 37

Heavy incessant rains have created havoc in Kerala triggering landslides and floods in the region. The death toll has risen to 37 with five people still missing.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has asked all government agencies which are currently involved in the flood relief and rescue operations to be on their toes keeping in mind the warning of heavy rain till August 15. Red has been issued in eight districts. Heavy rain is still continuing in Wayanad and Kannur districts.

Vijayan accompanied by Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday had an aerial survey of the worst affected districts of the State.

The CM has announced Rs 10 lakh assistance to those who have lost their homes and land and Rs Four lakh each to next of kin of those who lost their lives.

According to latest data, over 61,000 people are still sheltered in 520 relief camps across the state. Around 100 houses were completely destroyed and 1501 partially. Crops in more than 1300 hecters of land were destroyed in the rain fury.

Condition of roads and bridges have been damaged to such a state that they need to be reconstructed in many places.
