Azad was supposed to join Congress on February 15 but it was postponed due to the Pulwama  attacks by Jaish-e-Mohammad militants.

Azad tweeted,  "Met @RahulGandhi ji it was rightly decided that in mark of respect to the martyred soldiers of Pulwama my joining the @INCIndia will now take place on 18th February we will be in state of mourning for 3 days country is bigger than a person or party and soldiers are supreme Ameen,"

Azad was suspended by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2015 as he went public with his criticism of his party senior, Union Minister Arun Jaitley, over alleged corruption in Delhi's cricket body DDCA at a time it was headed by him. Congress offered him helping hand after his suspension from BJP.

The three time Member of Parliament was also a part of the 1983 cricket World Cup winning team.
