To further contain the spread of COVID-19, the Meghalaya government has decided to extend the ongoing lockdown in the East Khasi Hills (EKH) district by another week.

With this, the lockdown will be in force till 5 AM of June 21.

However, it was also informed that Deputy Commissioners (DC) can decide for other districts in the state.

Respective DCs of different districts can also decide on few relaxations as they deem fit, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed.

He further said that up to 20 per cent of non-essential shops can operate in certain areas of the state, adding that DCs can also permit up to 20% of commercial vehicles to operate.

Earlier, the state government had imposed a total lockdown in the state till June 14 due to surging COVID-19 cases. This has now been extended to June 21.

"Though the number of positive cases have come down in a few Districts but since the positivity rate is still in the danger mark, Cabinet has decided to extend the #lockdown in East Khasi Hills till 21st June 2021. DCs are empowered to decide for other districts," CM Sangma tweeted.

"Few relaxations will be allowed as deemed fit by respective DCs. Up to 20% of non essential shops may be opened in certain areas in the State. DCs may also permit up to 20% of commercial vehicles to operate," he added.
