One Killed, 5 trapped in Uttarakhand Landslide

A womanwas buried alive while five others were trapped in the rubble on Monday aslandslides triggered by heavy rains hit three different places in the watershedarea of Chuflagad, a tributary of Mandakini River in Chamoli district ofUttarakhand.

The debrisof landslides fell over three houses in Banjabgad and Lankhi villages in ghatarea of the district on Monday morning trapping the occupants inside, as quotedby District Disaster Management Officer NK Joshi by PTI.

The officer said that the body of a woman was pulled out from the debris by rescuers at Banjabgad while her nine-month old daughter is still trapped.

He furtherinformed that muddy waters of the flooded Chuflagad River swamped cowshedsburying livestock and washing away shops. He also stated that efforts areunderway to rescue people who are trapped in the rubble inside their houses andevacuate those living in the affected area to safety.

It hasbeen reported that heavy rains which started on Sunday evening are stillcontinuing.
