Incessant downpours lashed Nagaland’s Niuland district between Friday night and Saturday morning, triggering widespread flooding and landslides that have crippled the region. Over 70 villages have been affected, displacing thousands and dealing a severe blow to rural livelihoods.
According to an official statement issued on Saturday, the Niuland district administration confirmed that torrential rains caused local rivers and streams to breach their banks, inundating large swathes of land. The resulting floodwaters have submerged homes, damaged farmlands, destroyed paddy fields, fish ponds, and plantations, and swept away critical infrastructure, including roads.
One of the worst-affected areas is the road between S. Hetoyi and Ghokuto villages, where a massive landslide has rendered the route completely impassable. A section of the road has been washed away, leaving Ghokuto village entirely cut off from essential services like food, drinking water, and emergency healthcare.
The district administration said it is working to assess the extent of the damage and provide emergency relief, though continuing rainfall has severely hampered rescue and relief operations.
Meanwhile, Dimapur Deputy Commissioner Tinojongshi Chang has issued a public advisory warning residents to stay away from riverbanks and low-lying areas, as the risk of flash floods remains high due to swollen rivers and unstable terrain.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has also raised a red flag, stating that the persistent rainfall has greatly increased the threat of flash floods and landslides across the region. Authorities have urged the public not to engage in activities such as fishing, swimming, or picnicking near rivers and streams during this hazardous season.
