Assam Flood Update: Rains Trigger Floods in Jorhat, Golaghat, Charaideo
Continuous rainfall in the hills over the past two days has caused the water level of the Kakodonga River to rise, triggering severe flooding across several villages under Borhola Mouza. Areas along the Jorhat-Golaghat district border, including Athkhelia Bosa and Borkachari, have been badly affected, with embankments breached at multiple points.
The floodwaters have submerged homes, courtyards, and thousands of bighas of Sali paddy saplings. In Athkhelia Bosa village alone, floodwaters have entered more than 50 households, forcing families to evacuate. Since last night, many have taken shelter at the Third Bosa Primary School.
However, the affected families alleged that no food supplies or relief materials had been provided by the administration, sparking anger among the flood-hit residents.
Locals have also blamed illegal sand mining in the Kakodonga River, allegedly carried out day and night by sand mafias near Athkhelia and Borkachari Higher Secondary Schools, for weakening the riverbanks. These unauthorised activities have reportedly led to the embankment breaches that caused the current flood situation.
Meanwhile, torrential rain from midnight till morning has led to widespread flooding across multiple regions in the Charaideo district. Localities including Mathurapur, Panijan, Gasikola, Deosal, Duwara Gaon, Tengapukhuri, and Thanamukh have been submerged.
The intense downpour caused roads, ponds, and low-lying areas to go underwater, severely affecting daily life and mobility in the region.
