Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse: The Kargil Hero Who Continues to Inspire India’s Youth

As the nation remembers its heroes of the Kargil War, one name continues to resonate with unwavering pride across India, especially in the North East—Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, MVC (Posthumous). His story is not just one of battlefield valour, but a profound legacy of inspiration for generations of young Indians seeking purpose, courage, and pride in their identity.

Born in the serene village of Nerhema in Nagaland’s Kohima district, Kenguruse was a teacher by profession and a patriot by calling. Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1998, he joined the 2 Rajputana Rifles—a decision that would soon place him at the heart of one of India’s most crucial military operations: the Kargil War of 1999.

On the fateful night of June 28, 1999, at an altitude of over 16,000 feet in the Drass sector, Captain Kenguruse volunteered to lead a Ghatak Platoon in an assault on a heavily fortified enemy position. Faced with a steep icy cliff and intense enemy fire, he removed his boots to climb barefoot—relying on the grip of his feet against the unforgiving terrain. Wounded but undeterred, he charged forward, single-handedly neutralizing multiple enemy combatants before succumbing to his injuries. His unmatched bravery earned him the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest wartime gallantry award.

But for Lt Col Amit Shukla, PRO (Defence) for Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, Captain Kenguruse’s sacrifice transcends the battlefield.

“His legacy is more than a tale of battlefield valour—it is a beacon for young people navigating a world full of challenges and distractions,” said Lt Col Shukla in a statement.

A Beacon of Values for Youth

Captain Kenguruse’s life and sacrifice are etched into military institutions, classrooms, and the collective memory of the nation. His story is told not just to honour a soldier but to ignite a fire within the next generation. Lt Col Shukla underlined five key virtues from Kenguruse’s legacy that make him a timeless role model:

  1. Unyielding Courage – In the face of mortal danger, he acted with fearless resolve. “True strength lies in the will to act, not in the absence of fear,” remarked Shukla.

  2. Leadership by Example – Captain Kenguruse did not just command—he led from the front. His leadership continues to teach that true leaders inspire through action and selflessness.

  3. Dedication to Duty – Even when wounded, he prioritised mission success over personal safety. It’s a call for today’s youth to embrace responsibility and duty over comfort.

  4. Pride in Identity – A proud son of Nagaland, he proved that regional identity can coexist with national service. He inspires the youth of the Northeast—and beyond—to serve India with both pride and unity.

  5. Legacy of Inspiration – His life is proof that one individual, driven by conviction and purpose, can impact a nation’s soul. From schools to military academies, his story is a lesson in patriotism and determination.

Remembered and Revered

Over two decades later, Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse’s name continues to echo through the hills of Nagaland, the training grounds of the Army, and the hearts of millions of Indians. Schools and defence institutions often narrate his story to cadets, students and aspirants—not just as an act of remembrance, but as a call to action.

His legacy is lived every time a young Indian chooses courage over comfort, service over self, and country above all else.

For the youth of India, especially in the North East, Captain Kenguruse is not just a war hero. He is a symbol of what it means to live with honour, to lead with heart, and to serve with pride.
