ULFA (Independent)
ULFA (Independent), or ULFA-I, is a banned militant outfit operating primarily in Assam, India. It is a splinter faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) that chose to continue its armed struggle for a sovereign Assam, rejecting peace talks with the Indian government. Formed in 2012 under the leadership of Paresh Baruah, ULFA-I has been involved in several acts of violence, extortion, and attacks targeting security forces, infrastructure, and civilians.
The group maintains camps along the Indo-Myanmar border and has often used guerrilla tactics to carry out ambushes, including high-profile attacks in Upper Assam. The outfit funds its operations through extortion and has been linked to arms trafficking in the Northeast region.
Despite several setbacks and arrests of top commanders, ULFA-I remains active, although its influence has significantly waned in recent years due to sustained counterinsurgency operations by Indian security forces and declining public support.
