The Assam unit of the BJP has sharply criticised the recently organised ‘Assam Sanmilita Nagarik Abhibartan’ held at the Pragjyotish Cultural Complex in Guwahati's Machkhowa, labelling it as a politically motivated event aimed at disrupting Assam’s development and industrial momentum under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In an official statement issued by the party’s state headquarters, BJP spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sharma accused a section of political leaders and left-leaning intellectuals of trying to mislead the public by spreading misinformation. He said the event was not a citizen-driven initiative but part of a planned campaign to serve narrow political interests.
Referring to the remarks made during the event by Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi and Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Sharma said both leaders expressed willingness to join hands with the Congress in the next Assembly elections. He said this shows they are more interested in power than in principles, and that joining hands with the Congress—a party blamed for the deaths of 855 Assamese youth during the Assam Movement—was a betrayal of regional pride.
Sharma further alleged that by opposing the government’s ongoing eviction drives—meant to clear illegal encroachments from government land, forest areas, and sattra properties—the organisers had indirectly supported what he termed as aggressive land encroachment by “Miya Muslims.” He claimed that such encroachments threaten Assam’s social, cultural, economic, and political fabric.
The BJP also pointed out that the event made no mention of the widespread land encroachments that reportedly occurred during the tenure of former Congress Chief Ministers Hiteswar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi.
Sharma cited that during their regimes, over 15,000 bighas of land belonging to more than 900 sattras were allegedly occupied by settlers of suspected Bangladeshi origin. Instead of addressing this past, the event focused on criticising recent eviction measures undertaken by the current government.
The party also cast doubts on the credibility of the event’s key organisers, including Dr Hiren Gohain, Paresh Malakar, and Abdul Mannan. Sharma stated that these individuals had consistently opposed the Assam Movement and openly supported the cause of illegal immigration from Bangladesh, which, according to him, makes the intentions behind the event self-explanatory.
