A Congress worker was reportedly detained late Monday night in Golaghat district on suspicion of throwing a bottle at the convoy of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The person detained has been identified as Rahul Phukan, a resident of the Sarupathar constituency. The incident is believed to have taken place around 1:30 pm near Rajiv Bhawan, where a group of Congress workers were staging a protest wearing black badges. The demonstration was reportedly directed against cabinet minister Jayanta Mallabaruah.
Responding to the incident with sarcasm, CM Sarma remarked, “When else will Congress protest if not in front of a BJP leader? If 12-13 boys don’t object to me here, how will they answer their leaders in Guwahati? I appreciate their efforts. There is nothing to feel bad about. Even better if the bottle had hit me.”
Monday witnessed statewide protests by Congress workers across Assam, centered around allegations of the illegal sale of Gir cows to influential politicians and ministers. The controversy, which has been simmering for weeks, reached a flashpoint in Golaghat — the Chief Minister’s scheduled destination for inaugurating a new indoor stadium at the GDSA Complex, located close to the district Congress office.
Ahead of his visit, large numbers of Congress supporters gathered, waving black flags and carrying placards demanding a proper investigation into what they called the “Goru Sur” (cow theft) scandal. Emotions ran high as protestors accused the BJP-led government of shielding powerful individuals involved in the case, while also suppressing dissenting voices.
Taking a sharp dig at the Opposition, CM Sarma dismissed the protests as hypocritical. “Congress leaders who consume beef have no moral ground to talk about Gir cows,” he said. “If they truly care about cows, let them take a pledge with me to stop cow slaughter from the next Eid. Do they have that courage?”
The Chief Minister further named Congress leaders including Rakibul Hussain, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and Nurul Huda, alleging that they consumed beef and had no right to speak on cow protection. He also claimed that nearly 1,400 cows were slaughtered during Bakri Eid in Dhubri. “We protect cows even when they’re dying, but Congress sacrifices them in Kurbani,” he added.
