The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is working to restore train services on the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section by Monday, following major disruptions caused by a recent landslide that damaged a key stretch of the railway line.
According to Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR, around 100 meters of railway track were badly damaged due to a slope collapse near a road situated just 15 meters from the line. The landslide was triggered by relentless heavy rainfall in the region.
A high-level review meeting was held on June 24, bringing together the Chief Secretary of Assam, the General Manager of NFR, senior officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and other concerned agencies. During the meeting, a coordinated action plan was chalked out for the restoration of the affected section.
“Joint efforts are currently underway, and if all goes as planned, train operations are expected to resume from Monday,” Sharma stated.
To speed up the recovery work, over 25 units of heavy machinery — including excavators, JCBs, and dumpers — have been deployed at the site. In addition, nearly 200 workers are engaged in the round-the-clock restoration efforts.
As a result of the landslide, multiple trains on this vital hill section have either been cancelled or partially suspended, impacting connectivity in the region.
Notably, the Lumding-Badarpur stretch is a critical rail link for the Barak Valley and Tripura.
