Road connectivity between Assam's Haflong and Silchar has been completely disrupted for the past five days due to heavy rainfall and landslides, severely affecting transportation in the region, sources said.
The disruption reportedly occurred after rainwater washed away a portion of the road in the Jatinga-Harangajao stretch. As a result, all vehicular movement along this crucial route has come to a standstill.
Additionally, the blockade has caused massive traffic jams along the national highway, with thousands of trucks headed towards Agartala, Mizoram, Silchar, and Haflong stranded on the route.
Particularly in the forested stretches of Lumding, truck drivers are in distress due to the absence of shops or markets. They are facing an acute shortage of drinking water and food. Perishable goods, including fresh vegetables being transported in several trucks, have begun to rot.
Stranded drivers have appealed to the administration to at least provide them with water and basic food supplies to help them survive the ongoing ordeal.
In addition to the road closure, train services through the crucial Lumding–Badarpur hill section in Assam have been suspended after a massive landslip and boulder fall blocked the railway tracks between New Haflong and Jatinga Lampur. This has led to a complete shutdown of both road and rail services between Haflong and Silchar.
