Vigilant locals took into their own hands after serious irregularities were allegedfly found in an ongoing road repair project at Bogachola in Sipajhar, under Assam’s Darrang district.
The road, which connects Nao-dinga to Andherighat via Jayantipur, was being repaired following repeated public complaints. But instead of bringing relief, the work has triggered fresh anger due to its poor quality and alleged negligence by the contractor.
Residents, who had long demanded proper repairs, were shocked to see that old, broken, and damaged blocks were being reused instead of installing new ones. Locals also pointed out that no water was used during the repair process, which raised doubts about how long the road would last once the work was completed.
The road serves as a vital link between several villages, and locals had earlier submitted complaints to the concerned department, urging proper repair. While officials had assured corrective steps, the quality of work on the ground told a different story, deepening public frustration.
As word spread, frustrated locals gathered at the site and questioned the workers. Unable to get satisfactory answers and angered by what they saw as open disregard for public interest, they eventually forced the workers and supervisors to leave the site, bringing the work to a halt.
Although the repair was initiated after official assurance, the apparent mismatch between promises and actual work has left the community feeling betrayed.
People in the area are now demanding strict action from the Public Works Department or relevant authorities. They want proper monitoring of the work and a commitment to using good-quality materials so that the road can be repaired in a way that lasts.
