President Droupadi Murmu has given her assent to the Centre's proposal to convene the Monsoon Session of Parliament from July 21 to August 21, 2025, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Wednesday.
Taking to X, Rijiju posted, “The Hon’ble President of India has approved the proposal of the Government to convene the Monsoon Session of Parliament from 21st July to 21st August, 2025. In view of the Independence Day celebrations, there will be no sittings on the 13th and 14th of August.”
This announcement comes in the backdrop of mounting pressure from Opposition parties demanding a special session of Parliament, particularly to address national security concerns in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.
The upcoming session will be the first since the Indian government launched Operation Sindoor on May 7. The operation was initiated in direct response to the Pahalgam terrorist assault in Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead and triggered nationwide outrage.
Earlier this year, the Budget Session commenced on January 31 and saw the passage of key legislation, including the Waqf Amendment Bill. The session was held in two phases: the first part comprised nine sittings of both Houses, while the second part included 17 sittings — making a total of 26 sittings for the entire session.
During the second leg of the Budget Session, the Lok Sabha deliberated and voted on the Demands for Grants for the Ministries of Railways, Jal Shakti, and Agriculture & Farmers Welfare. The remaining Ministries and Departments' demands were approved on March 21, following which the associated Appropriation Bill was introduced and passed the same day.
In addition, on March 11, the Lok Sabha passed several Appropriation Bills including those concerning:
• The Second and Final Batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants for the fiscal year 2024–25,
• Excess Demands for Grants for 2021–22,
• Supplementary Demands for Grants for Manipur for 2024–25, and
• Demands for Grant on Account for Manipur for the financial year 2025–26.
The Finance Bill, 2025, was passed by the Lok Sabha on March 25.
Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, significant discussions took place on the functioning of several key ministries, including Education, Railways, Health & Family Welfare, and Home Affairs.
