Election authority chief Sadi Guven today said the President received the absolute majority of all valid votes.

With 99 per cent of votes counted, State media reports said Tayyip Erdogan won 53 per cent votes and his closest rival Muharrem Ince won 31 per cent.

The final results will be announced on Friday.

The polls were the most fiercely-fought in many years, and Tayyip Erdogan is set to assume sweeping powers under Turkey's new constitution.
