AGP continues double speak on Panchyat

Pratidin Bureau

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has continued to double speak on the Panchyat Poll with two sets of leaders are saying two things. The ministers are in favour of an alliance while non minister AGP MLAs are against it.

Today another leader Ramendra Narayan Kalita fired his bullet, saying that the party has decided to fight the upcoming panchayat elections alone. Interestingly the same men had no qualms in grabbing the Chairmanship post of the state government, which has minister of state rank.

"We have decided to contest the panchayat election alone," the Gauhati West MLA said on Friday adding, "We do not want power at the cost of the interests of the indigenous people of Assam." Kalita also said that they will not join hands with BJP in the panchayat polls even if the saffron party wants.

"A party that favours the bill is against the indigenous people of Assam. We have to sever ties with them," AGP founder-president cum Ex-CM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta had earlier said.

Elections to panchayats in Assam will be conducted in two phases— on December 5 and December 9 in 26 districts. The counting will take place on December 12.
