Assam floods: Death toll rises to seven

With one more case of death due to flood reported from Dhemaji district, the number of the flood-related death toll has increased to seven. Around 14,06,710 people in 2,168 villages under 25 districts of Assam are currently affected by the flood.

The flood-affected districts are: Dhemaji, Lakhimpur,Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon,Kokrajhar, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hojai, Nagaon, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat,Sibsagar, Dibrugarh, West Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Cachar, Dhubri and Tinsukia.

As per Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the district administrations have set up 62 relief camps in Biswanath, Sonitpur, Baksa, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Hojai, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia and 20,047 people are currently taking shelters in the camps.

Meanwhile, 70 per cent of the Kaziranga National Park and its 95 camps were submerged in water. Forest guards have also been put on duty at night to avoid any poaching chances by hunters.
