Ban liquor in Assam, demands Golaghat people

Pratidin Bureau

Several hundred people in Golaghat on Wednesday organized protest rally and demanded total prohibition of liquor in Assam. The protesters shouted slogans to free Assam from liquor in front of Golaghat DC office.

Notably, in February more than 160 people were killed in Golaghat and Jorhat after consuming country liquor.

"We demand the Assam government to impose a total ban on liquor in the State," said a protester. "The ban should not be restricted to country liquor and must include all alcohol. Women are suffering domestic violence due to alcohol abuse," added another. The protest was organised by Modmukta Asom Dami Samiti.
