Famous Jonbeel Mela starts

The famous Jonbeel Mela started on Thursday along the bank of Jonbeel under Morigaon district. Apart from the local people, the three day historic programme is expected to attract tourists from outside the State.

The Jonbeel Mela usually held from the first Thursday after the Magh Bihu. On the second day of the annual extravaganza, indigenous tribal communities of the hilly areas come down and interchange their merchandise with the people of the State in a barter system, for which the Mela is famous for.

According to reports, the Jonbeel Mela begun from 15th century AD. Long ago, it was organised by the Tiwa (Lalung) to discuss the prevailing political situations.
