People support ban on single-use plastic

Peoplefrom across the State were seen supporting the ban on single-use plastic.People of Assam have accepted the move initiated by Prime Minister NarendraModi-led BJP government in Centre.

Special cleanliness drives were organised across the State on Wednesday, in connection with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and PM Modi's vision of clean India and plastic-free environment. People from various sections of the society participated in the drives. Besides, urging citizens to eliminate the use of single-use plastic, the people were also seen suggesting the shopkeepers to provide eco-friendly bags to its customers.

It may be mentioned here that in a bid to raise awareness about the impact of plastic and encourage the use of eco-friendly alternatives, Pratidin Time has also come up with a campaign 'Say No To Plastic'; under which it proposes to make Assam plastic-free State.

Alsoafter considering the adverse effects of plastic carry bags on the environmentand health, the Government of Assam has also felt that its usage is having aharmful effect on the environment and human health and the Department ofEnvironment and Forest has issued a notification on Monday imposing a completeban of the use, manufacture, import, supply, store, transport, sale and / ordistribute plastic carry bags less than 60 mm and thickness less than 50microns, short life PVC and all chlorinated plasticbags/sheets/banners/flex/buntings/flags (irrespective of thickness).
