SC seeks Govt’s response for Tripura NRC

Pratidin Bureau

The Supreme Court on Monday had sought response from the Centre on a appeal seeking implementation of the national register for citizens (NRC) in Tripura to identify illegal immigrants in the state.

A bench comprising CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph considered the petition filed by Tripura People's Front seeking registration of citizens for Tripura in the NRC to identify illegal immigrants.

This comes two days after Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday said that he will implement the NRC in his state on Centre's suggestion if the exercise is successful in Assam. Deb also said if the Centre decides to approach Tripura for an Assam-like NRC, he will take it forward but until then there is no such plan.
