EC directs Twitter to pull-down poll-related tweets

The Election Commission has ordered micro-blogging platformTwitter India to remove all tweets related to exit polls. The order comes at atime when the Phase VI Lok Sabha elections are nearing towards their end on May19.

But Twitter was yet to react to the EC order.

Apart from the social media company, ECI has also pulled upand sent notices to three media houses for publishing surveys which predictedthe election results. The Election Commission(ECI) had asked "as to whyaction should not be taken against them for violation of provision of section126A of Representation of the People Act".

The exit polls would be announced on May 19, after voting inthe last phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

The ECI has been taking several steps to monitor the contentbeing spread social media platforms during the time of Lok Sabha elections. Thesocial media sites become a medium of fake political campaigns and fake newswhich may influence the voters' choice.
