Cricket World Cup: England Thrash Afghanistan

Hosts England on Monday defeated Afghanistan comfortably by 9 wickets in their second and final World Cup warm-up match at the Oval.

Batting first Afghanistan scored 160 in 38.4 overs, with all-rounder Mohammad Nabi scoring a fighting 44.

In reply, the hosts raced away to the winning mark in the 18th over.

Opener Jason Roy remained unbeaten scoring 89 in 46 balls, smashing 11 fours and 4 sixes. Joe Root remained unbeaten at 29 in 37 balls, hitting three fours. Opener Jonny Bairstow scored a 22 ball 39 with 7 fours and 1 six.

It was a good comeback from the hosts after it lost the first warm-up game against its arch rivals Australia.

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan team that won a thriller against Pakistan on Monday was exposed to some world class display of cricket and the Asian nation has a lot of loose ends to mend before the real action starts on May 30.

England takes on South Africa in the opening match on May 30, while Afghanistan will play the defending champions Australia on Saturday, June 1, in their opening match.
