Gaming disorder a mental health issue, says WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday announced that playing video games compulsively is now a mental health disorder.

"Gaming disorder" shall be added to the latest revision of WHO's International Classification of Disorders.

The decision has been taken after observing the obsessive gaming phenomenon as a legit disorder around the world.

Gaming disorder can be diagnosed by three basic signs:

  • Little to no control over gaming
  • Increased priority given to gaming to the point of placing other work on the periphery
  • Continuation despite negative consequences

Some mental health professionals, however, have been fighting this classification
