Rockets Hit Near US Embassy in Baghdad

Pratidin Bureau

Three rockets hit near the US embassy in the Iraqi capitalBaghdad's high-security Green Zone, on Monday night.

The Katyusha rockets hit inside the Iraqi capital's GreenZone, which houses government buildings and foreign missions, Iraqi policesources told Reuters.

No casualties were immediately reported. Sirens could be heard blaring in the area after the missiles made an impact. Iraq has recently been rocked by protests amid soaring tensions between Washington and Tehran, following a drone strike that killed top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad earlier this month.

In retaliation, Iran launched several missiles at Iraqi bases housing American troops. The US has blamed Iran-backed paramilitary groups for a spate of similar attacks in recent months on the Green Zone, but there has never been a claim of responsibility.
