Unfortunate...: Akhil Gogoi Slams Congress' "Unilateral" Candidate List Release

Akhil Gogoi, who represents the Sivasagar constituency in the Assam assembly, criticised the Congress on Tuesday, calling the latter’s move to release its first candidates list for the upcoming polls as "unfortunate" and “unconstitutional”.

In a strongly worded reaction to the Congress candidate list, Akhil Gogoi said that releasing it even as seat-sharing talks were underway with the party was regrettable.

Gogoi said, “Unfortunate! Even as alliance talks were underway, the Congress unilaterally released its candidate list like this, displaying its unconstitutional nature. I felt bad about it.”

His comments indicate a rupture in ties between Raijor Dal and Congress, with the Assam assembly elections approaching fast. Although official dates have not been announced, it is expected to be held in April.

Congress Indications

Meanwhile, the Congress has clarified that, as of now, an alliance with Raijor Dal has not yet materialized but efforts are on. Despite earlier speculation of a broader anti-BJP front, negotiations have not materialised into a formal seat-sharing arrangement.

However, the party has confirmed an understanding with the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), signalling that selective regional coordination remains part of its strategy.

The absence of a Raijor Dal tie-up may fragment opposition votes in certain constituencies, particularly in Upper Assam and select indigenous belts, a factor that could significantly influence close contests.
