Ambari Trees Relocated to Lachit Ghat Amid Protests in Guwahati

In a late-night operation, several decades-old trees from Guwahati’s Ambari area were relocated to Lachit Ghat, sparking emotional responses from locals and environmentalists alike. The tree transplantation began around 11:30 PM, using advanced cranes and heavy machinery to carefully uproot and transport the trees.

Despite widespread protests, social campaigns, and appeals by nature lovers and environmental groups, the government went ahead with the relocation, citing developmental needs. The trees, estimated to be 30–35 years old, were moved with their roots intact using specialised equipment.

Local business owners and residents expressed sorrow and nostalgia. The owner of a showroom in the locality said, "I just wish the trees stay alive. I hope they are relocated to a good place. I have so many memories attached to them. These trees are 35-year-old and they stood like silent companions. The shelter they gave during the summers is now gone. We tried everything to save them, but failed. Even after so many protests, we had no other choice."

“These trees were part of our daily life — people used to rest in their shade. It won’t be the same without them,” said one shopkeeper.

Environmental activists are cautiously optimistic. “We hope the trees survive. At least let the public know where exactly they’ve been replanted so we can visit,” said one protester. Others echoed a similar sentiment, stating they are “50% hopeful” that the trees will survive in their new home.

Meanwhile, the concerned authorities have reassured that all efforts will be made to ensure the trees thrive at Lachit Ghat, now their new address.
