Army Doctor Saves Elderly Passenger Mid-Air Aboard IndiGo Flight

Around 6:20 PM, the elderly passenger lost consciousness and began exhibiting alarming symptoms of hypoglycaemia, including profuse sweating, a feeble pulse, and cold extremities. Reacting quickly, the IndiGo cabin crew administered oxygen and made an emergency call for medical assistance onboard.

Among the passengers was Major Mukundan, an Army medical officer returning from leave. Responding without hesitation, he assessed the situation and found the patient semi-conscious with reactive pupils—classic signs of a sudden drop in blood sugar levels.

With only limited resources available at cruising altitude, Maj Mukundan administered oral sugar and oral rehydration salts (ORS), closely monitoring the passenger's vitals and oxygen saturation throughout the remainder of the flight.

Upon arrival in Guwahati, the passenger was swiftly moved to the airport emergency room, where Maj Mukundan continued treatment until the patient was fully conscious and stable by 8:00 PM.

The Indian Army later issued a statement, commending Maj Mukundan’s timely and selfless act, which was crucial in saving the passenger’s life. The seamless coordination between the Army officer and the airline crew turned a potential tragedy into a story of heroism and duty beyond uniform.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the value of trained professionals in unexpected emergencies—and the quiet courage of those who rise to the occasion, even 35,000 feet above the ground.
