Chandmari Cops Term Assault Claim Baseless; CCTV Footage Under Review
The city police have launched an internal investigation after a youth, Aman Ali, accused personnel of Guwahati’s Chandmari Police Station of brutally assaulting him over a helmet violation. CCTV footage from the area is currently being examined, and officers on duty that night have been summoned for questioning. However, a senior police official has dismissed the allegations as “completely baseless.”
cAccording to his account, despite explaining the situation, he was forcibly knocked off his scooty, pinned down, and subjected to severe physical assault.
In a viral social media post, Ali alleged that the officers pressed his abdomen against the hot silencer of his vehicle, causing serious burn injuries. “They treated me like a terrorist,” he wrote. “One of them even tried to burn my face, but I turned away just in time.”
He further claimed that the policemen demanded Rs 10,000 in cash, refused online transfer, and damaged his scooty when he couldn't pay. “I said I could arrange Rs 8,000, but they insisted on cash. One of them even said Rs 5,000 would do,” his post read.
Ali also accused the officers of communal abuse, stating that after asking his name, one of them made a religiously charged remark. “Six uniformed men treated me like a terrorist just because my name is Aman Ali. I thought they were going to shoot me,” he wrote.
Currently under treatment for burn injuries and what he says is partial paralysis in his left hand, Ali has appealed to the Chief Minister, the Director General of Police, and the public for justice. He has demanded compensation for his medical expenses and the damage to his vehicle, as well as strict action against the officers involved.
The allegations have ignited massive outrage on social media, with calls for an impartial and transparent probe.
As pressure mounts, the Assam Police will now be closely watched for how it handles one of the most serious allegations of custodial brutality and communal abuse in recent memory.
